Gov. Ugwuanyi pledges to raise standard of education in Enugu

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has promised to raise the standard of education in the state. Speaking in Enugu on Tuesday when he received the executive committee of the Queens’ School, Enugu Old Girls Association, Ugwuanyi said the government would set up a committee to look into the slow pace of projects implementation in schools. He said he was displeased with the situation of schools in the state when he embarked on unscheduled visits to some of them. The governor said that education would remain the priority of this administration and he would do his best with the meagre resources to improve its standard. “This administration will engage the private sector in mentoring some of these schools. “We will introduce exchange programmes, school debates and give priority to less privileged schools in the state,” the governor said. Ugwuanyi also promised to continue the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, adding that he had no plans to review downward their pay. While commending the old girls for the visit, the governor promised to give adequate attention to the school, adding that the government had commenced the renovation of some its dilapidated buildings. Earlier, the President of the association, Mrs Ifeanyi Egwuatu, thanked the governor for visiting the school as well as appointing an old girl, Ms Rita Mba, as a commissioner. Egwuatu said the association would continue to partner with the state government in the development of the school. She said that the association had upgraded the school library, built toilets, provided computers and one 14-seater bus to the school as well as mentored the students in career and other educational programmes. The president appealed to the governor to provide a water tanker, generator and a sick bay for the school.
